Three keys to facing your fears

When was the last time that you did something that scared you? Like pushed you out of your comfort zone BIG TIME? Made you feel like you could leap over a tall building and be completely nauseous at the same time? Made you feel alive?!On the drive home from my week at the Kripalu Yoga Center in October, I had a vision : I saw a group of people in my living room meditating and I was leading them. Even though I had never lead a meditation group, I knew I was going to do this. My target audience was going to be people who were new to meditation and who were simply curious.

During that car ride, I created my course in about 10 minutes. It all came to me in a flash and I was super excited to get to work. However, it took me almost two months to even post anything about it on Facebook and when I finally did, I had a hard time getting people to commit.

Why?

I was scared.

Who was I to lead these types of sessions? Who would even come? Why would they trust me? Would people make fun of me for wanting to do this? How was this even going to work?

But here’s the thing about pushing yourself to this point : it’s all about the reward!

Scary = going to NYC for a weekend workshop because you just feel that you HAVE to go!

Life goes by so fast and we often get caught up in a routine that dictates our every move. And then, out of nowhere, we get a crazy idea that excites us (like taking an epic 11 day road trip to Oklahoma to visit a mercantile and a ranch).

However, this is when the ego jumps in and convinces us that we are silly and that we’ll probably fail or that our idea is a little too crazy so we don’t even try.

So what makes us able to get over this fear and take the leap?

For me, I always ask myself these three important questions :

1. “Who’s with me?” : Whether it’s my Spirit Junkie tribe, my friends and family or my amazing husband who knows exactly how to push me when I get scared, I surround myself with people who love me and who support me regardless of how crazy my ideas sound. I know they’ll always sign up for my workshops and if something doesn’t work out, they’ll be right there helping me figure out why it didn’t work and what I can do to make it better. So surround yourself with people who will support you no matter the outcome and it won’t seem as scary.

2. “What is my intention?” : I tune in to make sure that what I’m working on or what I want to do is coming from the right place. As much as the ego can hold us back, it can also make us believe that we are better than other people or more powerful and more special than someone else. So I always ask myself : “What is my intention by creating this workshop / session / blog post or by doing this activity?” and most of the time, my answer is ” to help others feel balanced and well” or “to challenge myself”. So check in with yourself  to see why you want to do a certain thing and make sure that your intention is coming from a place of love and not from wanting to please others.

3. “How will I feel if I don’t do this?” : Most of the time, the answer to this question is always the same for me : unfulfilled. That’s when I know I have to move. That’s when I know I have to push. That’s when I know that I have to do SOMETHING. Pushing through your fear will boost you and make you feel invincible and this feeling is priceless. I can’t imagine living a life feeling “meh” all the time. For me, that is not truly living.

Meditation class in my living room? Why not?

So for the past few weeks, I’ve been hosting a meditation group in my living room with four amazing ladies who chose to trust me and come along on this crazy journey of mine and every time they come over, I’m so excited to welcome them into my home. I’ve also launched and hosted a writing workshop this past Monday (which I debating on hosting or not for WEEKS) and I felt lit up! Now I know that I want to feel this way as much as possible. I no longer wish to live in fear!

That being said, as scary as your plans may be, you owe it to yourself to try. You never know who you’ll help along the way or how amazing you’ll feel. Whether it’s training to run a 5K, planning that crazy solo trip, trying that scary aerobics class or even just telling a certain someone how you feel, go for it! What do you have to lose?
