In honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d make a list of things I love. Obviously, my husband, family and cat top the list, but so do the following things (in no particular order) : cakes, cupcakes and frosting (obviously!), candy (especially gummy candy), summer, reading, travelling, Disney, puppies and kittens, sleeping in, coupons, road trips (especially spontaneous ones), magazines, ice cream, the ocean, salted caramel lattes, scary movies, The Walking Dead (which starts again tonight!!!), Cap Lumière…
I could go on, but there is also one more thing that I love in this world : my friends. I have been blessed with a great bunch of friends in my life and I don’t tell them how much I appreciate them enough so here we go…
Warning : proceed with caution as this post is about to get very mushy! And a little bilingual lol!
First off, I have my “Sex and the City” girls. We grew up watching the show and there are four of us in the group so when we go out, we feel like were Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte (although I will admit that we’re pretty much all Charlottes). Even though we don’t see each other as much as we’d like too, we always have a great time when we’re together. This summer, we went on a girls weekend away which we hadn’t done in seven years. Way long overdue! Lise, Steph and Mel, I know I can always count on you girls for some good times and some good food! Je vous aime!
Then there’s Joline. Joline and I met later on in life, but became good friends very quickly because our classrooms were side by side and we basically had the same wardrobe (RIP Smart Set). Then last year, she gave me the best gift ever when she asked me to be her daughter’s godmother. This kid is amazing and I’m so lucky to be a part of her life. Thank goodness we have unlimited texting because with her living in Ottawa, my cell phone bill would be insane! Marraine t’aime beaucoup Élise xox
Do you have a friend that you can go months without talking too and yet it feels like you spoke to her yesterday? That’s my friend Karen! We don’t talk often, but when we do, we usually close Cafe Archibald. Karen had an awesome baby boy last year and has come up with a brilliant idea in order for us to talk more often. We call each other at a specific time so that we’ve already put on our pyjamas, made a tea, and gotten comfy in order to chat without having to leave our houses in this cold, frigid winter. Brilliant! That way, we talk more often. I love it!
Marie-France, the world traveller whom I live vicariously through. This girl is braver than anyone I know. She’s lived in Jerusalem, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and presently resides in New York City. How cool is she? She knows what she wants and works VERY hard to get it. She’s definitely one of the smartest people I know and will know nothing but success throughout her life even if she doesn’t always believe it 😉
Mel B – Happy Birthday Mel (yesterday)! Mel is also a world traveller and the most environmentally conscious person I know. She has a kind heart and an old soul. She is spontaneous and always up for an adventure. She’s fun to be around and always comes up with creative suggestions for things to do. J’adore nos cafés / lunchs de six heures au Clémentine!
Mélanie and Chantal – We’ve known each other since we were six years old and even though we’ve all followed very different paths, we make supper plans about twice a year at the same restaurant to catch up. Even better, we’ve included a third supper date around Christmas time for the past two years where we bring our moms. It’s always a fun night. I’ve known these girls for so long that no topic is off the table and it’s nice to know they’re there whenever I need them.
MJ and the gang : this gang, super fun! I met MJ while working in a video store while I was in university and she “adopted” me and welcomed me into her gang. We also had a girls getaway in the fall and we hadn’t been all together in 15 years…that’s right, 15 years! We had so much fun that weekend and need to do it again much sooner than 2031. Right girls?
The girls at work – I wouldn’t make it through my workday without them. We understand each other so well and work well together. We laugh, we cry, we indulge and we workout together all in moderation (except the laughing – that happens every day). Les femmes, je suis tellement choyée de travailler avec vous. Vous êtes toujours là afin de m’encourager, de me pousser et de me relever. Vous m’aidez à grandir et à cheminer à tous les jours sans regrets!
Finally, my sister-in-law Laura : this girl has the most contagious laugh in the world! Laura laughs, we all laugh and I mean LAUGH! Like until your belly hurts and there are tears streaming down your face. And it happens pretty much every time we hang out. She is the most compassionate person I know and has a heart of gold. I’m truly honoured to have her as a “sister”.
I know some people find Valentine’s Day difficult or too commercialized, but I see it as a day to slow down and tell people how much they mean to you which is something that isn’t easy for me and that I don’t do often enough. So, to all of my family and friends, have a wonderful day and know that you all make my life a little brighter… xo
